A reception after a civil wedding doesn’t have to mean either a huge wedding party or a meal in a random restaurant. If you’re dreaming of an intimate celebration with your nearest and dearest, a cruise on the Brda in Bydgoszcz combines several of the best civil wedding reception ideas at once: a special venue, a backdrop for photos and time to talk with your guests, without the rigid programme of a wedding hall.
We’ll suggest how to coordinate the registry office ceremony with the cruise, how to plan the reception on the water and which formalities to think about early on. Treat the information on procedures as a general guide – what your civil registry office tells you is what counts.
A civil wedding in Bydgoszcz – formalities worth knowing in advance
Before you book a boat, set the date with the civil registry office – in Poland that’s the Urząd Stanu Cywilnego, or USC. Here are a few general rules described by the registry offices:
- The couple submit a declaration at the USC that there are no impediments to the marriage. It is valid for 6 months, and the wedding can take place once a month has passed since it was submitted – shortening this waiting period requires separate permission.
- On the wedding day, the couple and their adult witnesses present identity documents.
- Stamp duty is charged for drawing up the marriage certificate – the offices quote approx. €19.
- Since 1 March 2015, the law has allowed all couples to marry outside the registry office building, provided the venue ensures the solemn character of the ceremony and the safety of those present. The head of the USC decides whether to give consent, and there is an additional fee of approx. €220.
Check the required documents, available dates and the possibility of an outdoor ceremony directly with the USC where you plan to marry; if either of you is not a Polish citizen, ask early on which additional documents you will need. This article does not replace information from the registry office or legal advice. We take care of what happens after the ceremony – the reception on the water.
Civil wedding reception ideas on a boat in Bydgoszcz – the day’s plan
| Stage | What to plan |
|---|---|
| Ceremony at the USC | Guests arriving in good time, rings, documents, witnesses |
| Photo shoot | A short outdoor session: Mill Island (Wyspa Młyńska), Bydgoszcz Venice (Wenecja Bydgoska), the boulevards along the Brda |
| Getting to the boarding point | We’ll agree the location when you book – leave some time to spare |
| Cruise (2 hours) | Welcoming the newlyweds, a toast, catering, good wishes, the first dance |
| After the cruise | Dinner for your closest family and friends in the centre, or a quiet end to the day |
Allow at least an hour between the ceremony and the cruise – the congratulations outside the registry office always take longer than you’d expect. The departure time is set individually; a sunset cruise gives the most beautiful light for photos.
An intimate setting on a boat in Bydgoszcz – what we can arrange
We plan each wedding reception individually, and the price is agreed once we’ve talked about the number of guests and what you’re hoping for. The services available for occasions like this are described on our page about special occasions on a boat in Bydgoszcz, and all occasions on the BoatParty Bydgoszcz page.
- A personalised banner with the newlyweds’ names and the wedding date.
- Boat decorations in your wedding colours.
- Catering – hot, cold or barbecue – tailored to the time of day and the number of guests.
- A welcome drink and a red-carpet entrance – a simple way to make guests feel the importance of the moment.
- A live performance – for example, live music for your first dance.
- A photo report and a commemorative HD film – for guests who couldn’t come, and for you to enjoy on future anniversaries.
A programme without the wedding marathon
An intimate reception doesn’t need an MC or oczepiny – the traditional games and rituals of a big Polish wedding. A few fixed points are enough: welcoming the couple as they come on board, a toast from the witnesses (the Polish equivalent of the best man and maid of honour), a short speech from the parents or the couple themselves, and a first dance on deck. Leave the rest of the time for conversation – over a two-hour cruise, that’s what people remember longest.
If there will be children or older guests at the reception, tell us when you book. We’ll take it into account when planning the time and the boarding point, and you can choose the catering so that nobody goes home hungry.
The first dance on deck
On a boat, the first dance has a completely different setting from a hall – the river flows by in the background and the city skyline keeps changing. Choose a shorter version of your song, practise in the shoes you’ll be dancing in and decide in advance who will play your song and when. If you’d like a recording, order a commemorative HD film or ask one person to film it on their phone.
What affects the cost
The price of an intimate reception depends mainly on the number of guests, the type of catering and the extras you choose – a banner, decorations, a performance or a photo report. First decide what matters most to you, and start the conversation with us from there.
Bydgoszcz as a backdrop – photos after the ceremony
In central Bydgoszcz it’s easy to find a photo location without long journeys. Mill Island is about 6 hectares of greenery between the Brda and the Młynówka, its side arm, with the cascading Międzywodzie channel and the red-brick Rother’s Mills (Młyny Rothera). From the island, a footbridge known as the Bridge of Love (most Miłości) leads towards Opera Nova – a great spot for a photo of the two of you. Right next to it, along the Młynówka, stand the townhouses of Bydgoszcz Venice.
Depending on the route, from the deck you’ll also see the granaries along the Brda and the boulevards, among other sights. Read more about the views in our article on a Bydgoszcz river cruise on the Brda.
Checklist for the couple and the witnesses
- The date at the USC – registry office first, then the cruise. Remember that cruises run during the season, from spring to autumn.
- Booking the boat via the booking form – at least 5 working days in advance, and for Saturdays in the summer season, the earlier the better.
- Number of guests – package prices are for groups of 30 or more; we quote smaller receptions individually.
- Menu, decorations, banner and music for the first dance.
- Information for guests – time, boarding point, comfortable shoes and something warmer for the evening.
- A person for the little things – someone to look after the rings, documents and flowers on the way from the registry office.
You’ll find a full list of preparations in our boat party planning checklist, and tips on what to wear in our guide on what to bring on a boat party. Long dress and heels? Flat shoes are a better bet for the gangway and the deck, and the crew’s instructions when boarding apply to the bride and groom too.
FAQ – a civil wedding reception in Bydgoszcz
Can the civil wedding itself take place outside the registry office?
The law allows it if the head of the USC considers that the chosen venue ensures a solemn character and safety; there is an additional fee of approx. €220. The decision rests with the registry office, so start by talking to the USC.
How long does a reception on a boat last?
You hire the boat for 2 hours. The departure time is set individually, so it’s easy to match it to the time of your ceremony.

Yes. Package prices are for groups of 30 or more, and we quote smaller receptions individually – just send an enquiry with your date and the number of guests.
When should we book the boat?
Ideally straight after setting the date with the USC. The form must be sent at least 5 working days before the event, and summer weekends get snapped up quickly.
