A Gdansk sunset cruise is easier to plan than you might think: all you need is the approximate sunset time for the month, and then you set sail roughly an hour before. That way your two-hour cruise covers the golden hour, the sunset itself and the blue hour, when the city switches on its lights above the Motława.
Below you’ll find approximate sunset times in Gdansk during the season, a ready-made way to work out your departure time and tips on how to prepare for an evening on the water.
What time is sunset in Gdansk? Times through the season
Gdansk lies in the far north of Poland, so in summer the sun sets late here and twilight lasts a long time. The table shows approximate times in local summer time (CEST), rounded to the nearest 5 minutes. The data comes from the sunrise-sunset.org calculator for the coordinates of central Gdansk and usually differs by no more than a minute or two from one year to the next.
| Date | Sunset (approx.) | End of civil twilight (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 May | 20:15 | 21:00 |
| 15 May | 20:45 | 21:30 |
| 1 June | 21:10 | 22:00 |
| 21 June | 21:25 | 22:20 |
| 15 July | 21:10 | 22:00 |
| 1 August | 20:45 | 21:30 |
| 15 August | 20:15 | 21:00 |
| 1 September | 19:35 | 20:15 |
| 15 September | 19:00 | 19:40 |
The end of civil twilight is the moment when the sun drops 6° below the horizon – until then the sky stays bright and colourful, and photos without flash still turn out well. The latest sunsets come around the summer solstice, in late June. From mid-July sunset gets steadily earlier, and in September each week “steals” well over ten minutes. Outside the dates in the table the sun sets correspondingly earlier, so always check the time for your exact date before booking.
Gdansk sunset cruise – how to set your departure time
A simple rule: set sail about 60–75 minutes before sunset. The first hour of the cruise then falls in the warm, low light, the middle on the sunset itself, and the final part on twilight, when the sky darkens and the first city lights are reflected in the water.
| When | Sunset (approx.) | Suggested departure | End of a 2-hour cruise |
|---|---|---|---|
| mid-June | 21:20 | approx. 20:15 | approx. 22:15 |
| mid-July | 21:10 | approx. 20:00 | approx. 22:00 |
| mid-August | 20:15 | approx. 19:00 | approx. 21:00 |
| mid-September | 19:00 | approx. 17:45 | approx. 19:45 |
If you’re planning dinner or an after-party once the cruise is over, count back from the time you want to be on dry land. In June a “sunset” cruise finishes late, so book your restaurant table with time to spare. At BoatParty we set the departure time individually – you can choose an afternoon, sunset or evening start.
Golden hour, sunset and twilight – what you’ll see from the water in Gdansk
Each phase of light creates a different effect, and what ends up in the frame depends on the route agreed when you book:
- Golden hour. The low sun brings out the colour of the brick water gates, granaries and townhouses along the Motława. It’s the best moment for portraits and a group photo.
- Sunset. In summer the sun goes down well to the north-west, so depending on which way you’re sailing it will appear above the rooftops or behind the group, backlighting everyone’s silhouettes.
- Twilight. After sunset the sky stays bright for quite a while and turns deep blue, while the city switches its lights on. That’s when the reflections in the water look most spectacular.
We describe examples of places that may appear on your route – from the Crane (Żuraw) to Ołowianka and the Dead Vistula (Martwa Wisła) – in our post Gdansk river cruise on the Motława – what you’ll see from the deck.
Weather, photos and what to wear – an evening cruise in Gdansk in practice
- The chill off the water. After sunset it quickly gets cooler on the river, even after a hot day. Bring a hoodie, jumper or light jacket.
- Clouds. You can’t order a sunset. Partial cloud can give you the most colourful sky, and even under full cloud cover you still have the atmosphere of the city at night – plan a programme that works on its own merits.
- Phone photos. Switch off the flash, use night mode and rest your elbows on something stable instead of leaning over the side.
- Sunglasses. Useful in the first part of the cruise, when the low sun shines straight in your eyes.
- Shoes. Flat, non-slip soles – the deck can get damp in the evening.

An evening cruise with BoatParty in Gdansk
On a private BoatParty cruise the boat is just for your group for 2 hours, and we’ll match the departure time to sunset on your chosen day. The boarding point and route are agreed when you book. A cruise like this suits a hen party, a birthday, a company team-building event or an anniversary – you’ll find all occasions on our page about boat parties in Gdansk.
A programme built around the sunset
It’s worth timing the key moments of the party with the light. Take the group photo in the first part of the cruise, while the sun is still above the horizon. Plan the toast, birthday wishes or the handing over of a present for a few minutes before sunset – that’s when everyone is looking the same way anyway. Save the dance music and the deck lighting for twilight, when the darkening sky turns the deck into a dance floor.
Package prices for groups of 30 or more start from €20 (Basic), €25 (Star) and €36 (VIP) per person, and smaller groups receive an individual quote. If photos in golden light matter to you, consider photo coverage – it’s included in the VIP package and can be added to the others as an extra. Before you send the form, have a look at our boat party planning checklist.
FAQ – Gdansk sunset cruise
What time should we set sail for a sunset cruise in Gdansk?
Ideally about 60–75 minutes before sunset. In mid-June that means setting off at around 20:15, in mid-August at around 19:00 and in mid-September at around 17:45.
When is the latest sunset in Gdansk?
Around the summer solstice, in late June. The sun then sets at around 21:25 summer time, and civil twilight ends at around 22:20.
Will the sunset be visible from every point on the route?
Not always. In the centre, buildings hide part of the horizon, so the most beautiful part is often the warm light on the façades and the sky after sunset. The route is agreed when you book.
What if it’s cloudy on the day?
The weather can’t be predicted far in advance, but the city looks great from the water in the evening even when it’s cloudy. It’s worth planning a programme that doesn’t depend solely on the colour of the sky.
How long does a sunset cruise last?
Every BoatParty package includes 2 hours of boat hire. We match the departure time to your chosen day.
