A Szczecin sunset cruise works when the departure time is matched to the calendar, not the other way round. Over the season, sunset shifts by more than two hours: in early May the sun goes down in Szczecin at around 20:30, at the end of June at around 21:34, and by mid-September as early as about 19:20.
Below you’ll find a table of sunset times, a simple rule for choosing your start time, a description of what – depending on the route – you can see from the Oder at golden hour, and tips on taking good photos from the deck.
What time is sunset in Szczecin? A table for the season
The times are approximate, given in local summer time (CEST), and assume a flat horizon – behind buildings the sun disappears a few minutes earlier. The “dusk” column shows the end of civil twilight, the point from which you need artificial light outdoors. The suggested start assumes a two-hour cruise with the sunset halfway through.
| When | Sunset (approx.) | Dusk (approx.) | Suggested cruise start |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early May | 20:30 | 21:10 | 19:30 |
| Mid-May | 20:55 | 21:40 | 20:00 |
| Early June | 21:20 | 22:10 | 20:15 |
| Second half of June | 21:30–21:34 | 22:25 | 20:30 |
| Mid-July | 21:20 | 22:10 | 20:15 |
| Early August | 21:00 | 21:40 | 20:00 |
| Mid-August | 20:30 | 21:10 | 19:30 |
| Early September | 19:50 | 20:30 | 18:45 |
| Mid-September | 19:20 | 19:55 | 18:15 |
The data come from a sunrise and sunset calendar for Szczecin; available dates during the season are confirmed when you book. The sun sets latest in the second half of June, and dusk then lasts almost an hour – these are the longest summer evenings on the Oder.
Szczecin sunset cruise – how to choose your departure time
The simplest rule: set off roughly an hour before sunset. The two hours of the cruise then fall into three natural stages:
- Golden hour. Low, warm light, best for portraits and group photos. Faces are well lit and the water starts to change colour.
- The sunset itself. Around halfway through the cruise – time for a toast and a moment of quiet before you go back to the music.
- Dusk and the first lights. The sky turns deep blue and the illuminations come on along the quays.
The rule is easy to adjust to your priorities. If daylight photos matter more to you, start an hour and a half before sunset. If you prefer the atmosphere of the city lights, a start 30–45 minutes before sunset is enough. Remember that you can’t plan the colour of the sky – cloud cover changes from day to day, but even under a cloudy sky, dusk over the river and the illuminated waterfront work their magic.
What you’ll see from the deck at sunset – the Chrobry Embankment, Łasztownia and the lights of Szczecin
The route is agreed individually, but the geography of central Szczecin is made for sunsets. The Chrobry Embankment (Wały Chrobrego) stands on the western bank of the West Oder (Odra Zachodnia), 17 metres above the river, and faces east – towards the islands of Grodzka, Bielawa and Łasztownia. Put simply, this means that when you look from the water towards the embankment, the setting sun is behind its buildings.
- Silhouettes against the sky. The buildings of the National Museum, the West Pomeranian Voivodeship Office and the Maritime University of Technology stand out against an orange sky. Above the rooftops rises the 110-metre spire of St James’s Cathedral – the tallest cathedral tower in Poland.
- Warm light on the other side. The Łasztownia quays catch the last rays, and the Maritime Science Centre, whose building looks like a huge ship, takes on colour.
- Illuminations after dark. Three historic port cranes known as the Dźwigozaury (“Craneosaurs”) are lit up after dark, and in the evening the Maritime Science Centre is illuminated too. On the embankment, two lighting towers that resemble lighthouses catch the eye.
We write more about the places you can see from the water, depending on the route, in our guide Szczecin river cruise – the Chrobry Embankment, Łasztownia and the port from the deck.
Sunset photos on a boat – practical tips
- Take the group photo 20–40 minutes before sunset. The light is warm then but still illuminates faces. After sunset you’ll mostly get silhouettes.
- Silhouettes against the sun. Set the focus and exposure on the sky – on a phone, just tap a bright part of the frame. People come out as dark outlines and the sky keeps its colour.
- After dark – night mode. Rest your phone on something stable and take short bursts, because the boat is moving.
- Charged phones. Evening photos and videos drain the battery fast – bring a power bank.
- Safety before the shot. Don’t lean over the side or climb on the railings. Follow the crew’s instructions.
If you don’t want to spend the cruise with a phone in your hand, choose the VIP package with a photo report or order a commemorative HD film as an extra.

FAQ – sunset cruises in Szczecin
What time should we set off on a sunset cruise in Szczecin?
Ideally about an hour before sunset, so that the sun goes down halfway through the two-hour cruise. In the second half of June that means a start at around 20:30, and in early September at around 18:45.
When is the latest sunset in Szczecin?
In the second half of June – roughly between 20 and 28 June the sun sets at around 21:34 summer time. Civil twilight then ends at about 22:27, so it stays light on the water for a long time.
What if it’s cloudy on the day of the cruise?
You can’t plan the colours of the sky in advance. Even when it’s cloudy, dusk over the river has its own atmosphere, and after dark – depending on the route – you can see the illuminated Craneosaurs and the Maritime Science Centre.
Is a sunset cruise available with every package?
Yes. Every package includes 2 hours on the boat, and the departure time is agreed individually – including so that you catch the sunset.
