A Pogoria sunset is one of the simplest recipes for a beautiful evening near Katowice. The wide surface of the lake reflects the sky, and from the deck of a boat nothing blocks the view. The key question is: what time should you set sail? In season, the sun sets over Dąbrowa Górnicza at around 20:00 at the beginning of May, at almost 21:00 around the summer solstice and at roughly 19:00 in mid-September.
Below you’ll find a table of approximate sunset times, a simple rule for choosing your cruise time and tips for taking great photos from the water.
Pogoria sunset – why it looks better from the water
On land, the sunset often disappears behind trees, buildings or a railway embankment. On the water the horizon is wider and the lake acts like a mirror – the colours of the sky are reflected in its surface. The Pogoria lakes are large bodies of water: the biggest, Pogoria IV, covers about 560 hectares and Pogoria III more than 200 hectares, so there’s no shortage of open space over the water.
The BoatParty boat sails on the Pogoria lakes in Dąbrowa Górnicza, about 20 km from Katowice. The cruise lasts 2 hours, and the departure time is agreed individually – so you can choose it specifically to catch the sunset. We give you the boarding point and route when you book.
What time is sunset over Pogoria – a table for the season
The times in the table are approximations for Dąbrowa Górnicza in summer time (CEST), calculated from astronomical data. From one year to the next they usually differ by no more than a minute or two. The last column shows the end of civil twilight – the moment when the sun drops 6° below the horizon. After that, the sky darkens quickly.
| Date | Sunset (approx.) | End of civil twilight (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 May | 20:02 | 20:39 |
| 15 May | 20:23 | 21:03 |
| 1 June | 20:44 | 21:28 |
| 15 June | 20:55 | 21:40 |
| 21–25 June | 20:57–20:58 | 21:43 |

The sun sets latest at the end of June. From mid-July the days get noticeably shorter: at the beginning of September sunset is at around half past seven, and in mid-September just before 19:00. In spring and autumn, sunset comes correspondingly earlier.
How to time your cruise for a Pogoria sunset
A simple rule: set sail about 60–90 minutes before sunset. You’ll spend the first part of the cruise in warm, low light, the sunset itself will fall roughly halfway through or in the second half of the cruise, and the final stretch will coincide with the colourful sky after sundown.

|---|---|---|---|
| mid-May | 20:23 | 19:00 | 21:00 |
| mid-June | 20:55 | 19:30 | 21:30 |
| mid-July | 20:49 | 19:30 | 21:30 |

Golden hour and blue hour – photos from the deck
Photographers talk about the golden hour: the time just before sunset when the sun is low and the light is warm and soft. It doesn’t have a fixed length – it depends on the time of year and the latitude. After sunset comes the blue hour: the sun is already below the horizon and the sky takes on cool, deep shades.
- Wipe your lens. A fingerprint smudge on your phone’s camera blurs sunset light more than anything else.
- Keep the horizon straight. On the water, a wonky horizon is immediately noticeable.
- Shoot silhouettes against the sun. Line your group up against the sky and lower the exposure by tapping a bright part of the screen.
- Take portraits side-on to the sun. In the golden hour, light from the side flatters faces and doesn’t make people squint.
- Don’t put your phones away too soon. The sky often shows its strongest colours anywhere from a few minutes to a quarter of an hour after sunset.
If you don’t want to think about photos at all, choose the VIP package with photo coverage, or add photo coverage or a keepsake HD film to another package. You’ll find sample shots from parties on the water in the BoatParty photo and video gallery.
Weather and what to wear for an evening cruise on Pogoria
In the evening it can be cooler by the water than in town, and you’ll feel the wind even on a warm day. Bring a hoodie, jacket or scarf, even if Katowice is sweltering. Comfortable flat shoes are best on deck, and during the cruise – as always – follow the crew’s instructions and don’t lean over the side.
Check the forecast the day before. A bit of cloud needn’t spoil things – clouds often take on beautiful colours and add drama to your photos. You’ll find a full list of things worth having on board in our article on what to bring on a party cruise.
After sunset – an evening at Pogoria and getting back to Katowice
If you’d like to stay by the water a little longer after the cruise, go for a walk: the path around Pogoria III is lit by 195 lamps, and the headland with its gazebo is illuminated after dark. Remember that drinking alcohol in public places, including by the lake, is generally prohibited in Poland. Sound carries a long way over water, so keep things calm once you’re on land.
Plan your return in advance: a hired minibus or the S1 train from Dąbrowa Górnicza to Katowice. Read more about the area in our guide to the Pogoria lakes, and about organising the whole evening in our boat party checklist.
