An evening Torun river cruise is the simplest way to see the Gothic Old Town the way it looks on postcards – from the river, with the illuminations reflected in the water. From the deck of a private boat you have the whole riverside line of walls, gates and towers right in front of you, plus two hours of partying with nobody but your own group.
Below we explain exactly what you’ll see from the water, how to pick a departure time that catches both the sunset and the city lit up, and what to bring for an evening by the river.
Torun from the Vistula – why the panorama makes the biggest impression in the evening
The riverside panorama is one of Torun’s great symbols. Its finest stretch is framed by two bridges: the Józef Piłsudski road bridge to the west and the E. Malinowski railway bridge to the east. Between them, on the right bank, runs the skyline of the Old Town.
After dark, hundreds of lamps built into the historic buildings light up the most valuable monuments, and their glow is reflected in the current. That’s why a night-time cruise on the Vistula shows the city differently from a daytime stroll: the small details disappear and what remains is the rhythm of illuminated towers, roofs and gates. A full description of the panorama, landmark by landmark, is published on the official City of Torun website (in Polish).
This is no random backdrop. The Medieval Town of Torun – the Old Town, the New Town and the ruins of the Teutonic Knights’ castle – was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on 4 December 1997.
What you’ll see on an evening Torun river cruise
We agree the exact route when you book. If the boat sails along the Old Town, then – looking at the right bank from west to east – you’ll pass the key points of the panorama in this order:
- Piłsudski Bridge and the nearby Racławice Barracks (Koszary Racławickie) – part of the 19th-century fortifications of Torun Fortress.
- Monastery Gate (Brama Klasztorna) and the Dovecote Tower (Baszta Gołębnik), the highest point of the riverside city walls.
- The Old Town Hall tower and the Sailors’ Gate (Brama Żeglarska), through which people once walked down to the port.
- The Cathedral of St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist – the most imposing building in the whole panorama.
- The Crane Tower (Baszta Żuraw), the Baroque granaries and the Bridge Gate (Brama Mostowa), built in 1432.
- The ruins of the Teutonic Knights’ castle, the towers of St James’s and St Catherine’s churches and, at the very end, the railway bridge.
The section of wall along Pod Krzywą Wieżą Street (“Under the Leaning Tower”) is regarded as the oldest surviving stretch of city wall in Poland. The same street is home to the Leaning Tower itself, which tilts about 1.4 m off vertical. From the deck, look out above all for the line of walls and gates – the tower is best seen up close before or after the cruise.
Want to take home good photos of the illuminated panorama? Switch off the flash, which won’t light up distant walls anyway, rest your phone against something steady and use night mode. The sharpest shots come just after sunset, when the sky is still deep blue and the illuminations are already on.
The left bank: Kępa Bazarowa island and Dybów
On the other side of the river the landscape is completely different – much greener. Kępa Bazarowa is an island between the Vistula and its side channel known as the Polish Vistula. It is around 2.65 km long, and almost half of its area is a nature reserve with riparian forest. This is where the First Peace of Thorn (Thorn being the city’s old German name) was signed in 1411.
On the left bank, around Dybów, stand the ruins of Dybów Castle. Work on the stronghold began in the 1420s on the orders of King Władysław Jagiełło, and in 1454 King Casimir IV Jagiellon issued the Statutes of Nieszawa here.
Torun’s bridges after dark
The bridges are an attraction in their own right during an evening on the water. Until 2013, Piłsudski Bridge was the only road bridge in the city. After it was extended, it gained new illuminations, three viewing points and walkways with lifts down to Philadelphia Boulevard (Bulwar Filadelfijski) and Kępa Bazarowa.
East of the centre, the General Elżbieta Zawacka Bridge crosses the Vistula; it opened on 9 December 2013. It is 540 m long with two steel arches, each spanning 270 m – the longest arch-bridge spans in Poland. The structure is lit by 140 white light points, so after dark the arches are easy to spot from a distance. Whether you’ll see it up close depends on the route agreed when you book.
How to plan your evening Torun river cruise
You hire the boat for two hours, and we agree the departure time individually. For an evening out, setting off shortly before sunset works best: you’ll spend the first part of the cruise in warm, golden light and the second with the panorama lit up.
| Stage | What happens | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Approx. 30 minutes before the cruise | The group meets at the agreed spot | One person checks the guest list and stays in touch with the organiser |
| First 30 minutes | Boarding, welcome, toast | The best moment for a group photo in daylight |
| Next 45 minutes | Sunset, music, chatting | The panorama keeps changing colour – make sure your phone is charged |
| Last 45 minutes | The illuminated Old Town and bridges, dancing | The Star and VIP packages add a light show with lasers |
In summer it gets dark late, so with an earlier start you’ll only see the illuminations towards the end. In spring and early autumn darkness falls sooner, and the whole cruise can take place after dark. Evenings on the water are often noticeably cooler than on land – bring a hoodie or jacket and comfortable flat shoes. You’ll find the full list in our guide to what to bring to a boat party, and if you fancy a riverside walk before the cruise, take a look at our guide to Philadelphia Boulevard.
